Astrological aspects explained

Aspects are specific angles between planets in a chart, such as the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°), and they describe how different parts of your personality interact.

Planets do not act in isolation. Aspects describe the relationships between them, measured as angles around the 360-degree zodiac wheel. When two planets form a recognised angle, their energies are considered linked, either blending smoothly or creating productive tension.

The five major aspects

The classic aspects come from dividing the circle by whole numbers.

  • Conjunction (0°): two planets in roughly the same place. Their energies merge and amplify each other, for better or worse depending on the planets involved.
  • Sextile (60°): an easy, cooperative link that offers opportunities. Sextiles often need a little effort to activate.
  • Square (90°): tension and friction. Squares can feel challenging, but they also build motivation, resilience and skill.
  • Trine (120°): a natural, flowing connection. Trines describe talents that come easily, sometimes so easily they are taken for granted.
  • Opposition (180°): two planets facing each other across the chart. Oppositions highlight a need to balance two sides, often experienced through relationships.

Why some aspects are harmonious and others challenging

The angles relate to the signs involved. Trines connect signs of the same element, such as Fire to Fire, so they share a temperament. Sextiles connect compatible elements, such as Fire and Air. Squares connect signs of the same modality but incompatible elements, such as Aries (Fire) and Cancer (Water), which creates friction. Oppositions connect opposite signs that share a modality but view life from opposite ends.

Modern astrologers generally avoid calling aspects good or bad. Challenging aspects are frequently where people develop their greatest strengths, and easy aspects can encourage complacency.

What is an orb?

Planets rarely sit at exactly 90 or 120 degrees from each other. The orb is the allowed margin. Many astrologers use orbs of around six to eight degrees for major aspects, a little wider when the Sun or Moon is involved and narrower for minor aspects. The closer an aspect is to exact, the stronger it is considered. A square within one degree will usually feel more prominent than one at seven degrees.

Applying and separating aspects

When a faster planet is moving towards an exact aspect, it is applying; when it has passed exactness, it is separating. Applying aspects are often read as building in intensity, while separating aspects are read as fading. This matters most in transit work and in traditional techniques.

Minor aspects

Beyond the major five, astrologers sometimes use minor aspects such as the semi-sextile (30°), semi-square (45°), sesquiquadrate (135°) and quincunx (150°). The quincunx in particular is popular and describes an awkward adjustment between two signs that have little in common. Beginners can safely focus on the major aspects first.

Aspect patterns

When several aspects link together, they form patterns with their own meaning:

  • Grand trine: three planets each trine to the other, forming a triangle of easy flow within one element.
  • T-square: two planets in opposition, both square a third planet, creating a driving point of tension.
  • Grand cross: four planets forming two oppositions and four squares, a demanding but powerful configuration.
  • Stellium: three or more planets clustered closely together, intensifying a sign or house.

How to read an aspect

Combine the meanings of the two planets and colour them with the nature of the aspect. Venus trine Mars might suggest an easy harmony between affection and desire. Moon square Saturn might suggest tension between emotional needs and a sense of duty, often a source of maturity over time. Always read aspects in context with signs and houses for the full picture.

Questions

What are aspects in astrology?

Aspects are meaningful angles between planets in a chart. They show how different parts of your personality interact, either harmoniously or with productive tension.

Are squares and oppositions bad?

No, they are not simply bad. They describe tension that often motivates growth, and many astrologers see them as sources of drive and skill.

What orb should I use for aspects?

Many astrologers use roughly six to eight degrees for major aspects, with a little more for the Sun and Moon. Tighter aspects are considered stronger, so the closer to exact, the more weight they carry.
