The 12 houses explained

The 12 houses divide a birth chart into areas of life, from self and money (houses 1 and 2) through relationships (7) and career (10), showing where each planet’s energy is most active.

If planets are the actors and signs are their costumes, houses are the stages where the action happens. The twelve houses divide the sky around your birthplace into sections, each tied to a different area of life. A planet’s house position tells you where its themes are most likely to show up.

Houses are calculated from your birth time and location, starting with the ascendant, which marks the beginning of the first house. That is why an accurate birth time matters so much for house placements.

The twelve houses

  • First house: self, appearance, temperament and how you begin things. Its starting point is the ascendant.
  • Second house: money, possessions, resources and self-worth. It shows what you value and how you build security.
  • Third house: communication, learning, siblings, neighbours and short trips. It covers everyday thinking and your immediate surroundings.
  • Fourth house: home, family, roots and private life. Its starting point is the IC, the base of the chart.
  • Fifth house: creativity, romance, play, pleasure and children. It shows how you express joy and take creative risks.
  • Sixth house: daily routines, work habits, service and wellbeing. It covers the practical rhythm of your days.
  • Seventh house: partnerships, marriage, close collaborators and open rivals. Its starting point is the descendant.
  • Eighth house: shared resources, intimacy, transformation and things that are hidden or taboo.
  • Ninth house: higher learning, travel, philosophy, belief and the search for meaning.
  • Tenth house: career, reputation, public role and long-term ambitions. Its starting point is often the midheaven.
  • Eleventh house: friends, groups, communities, hopes and future goals.
  • Twelfth house: solitude, the unconscious, endings, retreat and spiritual life.

The angular houses

Houses one, four, seven and ten are called angular houses because they begin at the four angles of the chart: the ascendant, IC, descendant and midheaven. Planets here are traditionally considered especially visible and active. Houses two, five, eight and eleven are succedent and relate to stability and resources. Houses three, six, nine and twelve are cadent and relate to learning, adaptation and transition.

Empty houses

With ten planets and twelve houses, everyone has some empty houses. An empty house does not mean that area of life is missing or unimportant. To read it, look at the sign on the house cusp and the planet that rules that sign. For example, if Gemini begins your fifth house, Mercury’s placement tells you more about your creativity and romance.

Houses and transits

Houses also bring daily and yearly astrology to life. When a planet moves through one of your houses, it highlights that area. Jupiter moving through your second house might coincide with a period of focus on resources and values, while Saturn moving through your seventh might coincide with a period of serious thinking about commitment. This is also why reading horoscopes for your Rising sign can feel more personal: the rising sign determines which houses are activated.

House systems

There are several ways to divide the chart into houses, which can produce different cusps. Placidus is popular in modern Western astrology, whole sign houses are used in Vedic and Hellenistic astrology, and equal houses offer a simple alternative. If a planet seems to change houses between systems, it is usually close to a cusp and may blend the meaning of both houses.

A simple way to remember them

Many beginners find it helps to see the houses as a journey. The first six houses describe personal development, from the self (1) through resources, communication, home, creativity and daily work (6). The last six turn outward, from partnership (7) through shared life, wider meaning, public role, community and finally the inner world (12) before the cycle starts again.
